Who We Are
City Locations
South Alabama Gas was formed in the early sixties as Conecuh-Monroe Counties Gas District and is owned by the cities of Evergreen and Monroeville. We also serve Frisco City, Excel, Repton, and Castleberry as franchise towns. We have always strived to be a good corporate citizen. Through the years, the gas district grew in numbers of customers and employees. In January of 2000, we changed our name to South Alabama Gas District. This allowed us to better identify with the geographic area in which we serve which now includes Butler, Brewton, and Flomaton. Since we are a municipality owned Gas District, we were created to serve the citizens. The District's "net profits" or "surplus revenues" are therefore distributed back to the member cities and the franchised towns in which we serve. The governing body, the Board of Directors are appointed by these member cities and franchised towns, ensuring local control of the District's business.
Governed By
South Alabama Gas is governed by a five-member Board of Directors. Two of the members of the Board are elected by the city council of the City of Evergreen, and two of the members of the Board are elected by the city council of the City of Monroeville. These four members serve a four-year term. The fifth member of the Board serves a twelve-month (one-year) term. The election of the fifth board member alternates among the four towns of Frisco City, Castleberry, Repton, and Excel. The councils of these towns alternately elect a member to represent their town for the one-year term.
Number of Customers
South Alabama Gas services an estimated 4,169 customers.
Revenue
The District's "net profits" or "surplus revenue" is distributed back to the member cities and the franchised towns it serves. It is distributed based on a formula that takes into account natural gas sales in each town for the preceding year. The District also pays franchise fees (similar to a business license fee) to each city and town in which natural gas is served.
